Group and Individual Riding Classes

There’s a lot to know when it comes to riding in a group. Everything from where to place your bike on the roadway to how to communicate with the rest of the group takes on a larger significance. This is because you’re not just responsible for your own safety and enjoyment, but you also share the responsibility for ensuring that the ride is safe and fun for everyone involved.  With this in mind, the Chapter conducts Group Riding Classes to familiarize both beginning and experienced riders with our procedures.  While general group riding techniques are relatively similar between groups, it is vitally important that all Chapter members be aware of and familiar with how the Milwaukee Chapter rides.  If you have not attended one of these classes, please sign up soon.  It is both classroom discussion as well as a ride to practice our Group Riding skills.

Accident Scene Management Classes

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration 1.2% of Roadway crashes involve motorcyclists but 9.5% of Roadway fatalities were motorcyclists! The purposes of the Accident Scene Management, Inc’s (ASMI) Bystander Assistance Programs are to reduce injuries and fatalities to motorcyclists through First Response Education. They also expect to reduce rescuer injury through proper training. The programs, based upon the US DOT First Responder Curriculum, are focused on Trauma rather than First Aid (low level trauma) and CPR (Heart attack and choking). All classes include a Lead instructor who is EMT or higher in medical training. For the price of a piece of chrome you can receive this invaluable training in just one to two days. Don't put this training off.  The Chapter Road Captains take these classes and we highly recommend them for the Chapter membership.  Visit ASMI’s website for more information and class schedules

The Wisconsin Roadway Users Responsibility Act took effect as of October 1, 2006.   This law has  several key points that will greatly benefit all motorcyclists, pedestrians, and bicyclists. The law allows motorcyclists to proceed through a vehicle actuated red light after 45 seconds of the signal failing to recognize a motorcycle, IF it is safe to do so, and the rider yields right of way to any oncoming traffic or any person in the crosswalk.  Here is a link to the legislation itself.  It may be handy to keep a copy on your motorcycle.       http://www.abatewis.org/docs/act466.pdf

Pothole Watch

Winter's ravages have left some streets pretty torn up, with gaping potholes big enough to swallow the front end of a bike. There's also sand and salt to contend with at this time of year. That stuff can accumulate anywhere, including on the sides of the roads, in turn lanes, and along lane striping. Keep an eye out for those hazards so you don't end your season before it really begins.
