Sad News – Gary Hackbarth

Gary D. Hackbarth of South Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was welcomed home on July 12 at the age of 73. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving wife Ambrocia and daughters Connie and Tina.
Gary maintained a positive, upbeat attitude since being diagnosed with cancer in December and was able to maintain his active lifestyle until about two weeks ago.
Gary grew up in Oshkosh and graduated from Oshkosh High School West in 1963. He attended several class reunions and returned annually to the area for the Zillges’ family reunions.
Early in his career. Gary pursued his interest in computers and became a typesetter at the Oshkosh daily “The Paper” which was the first newspaper in Wisconsin to be printed on an offset press.
Gary served in the U.S. Army from 1965-1967 as a Sergeant during the Vietnam war. He was stationed in Paris and traveled throughout Europe as a member of the 257 Signal Corps, responsible for transmitting key military communications from NATO allied forces.
Gary married Shari (Meitner) in 1967. He and his family moved to Milwaukee in 1972 and to South Milwaukee in 1978. Gary worked as a typesetter for North Shore publishers, which published several local suburban newspapers in the area. He than worked, and retired from, Delphi, a division of General Motor after over 33 years as a job setter.
Gary became a widower in 1992 when his wife died unexpectedly.
Gary was a volunteer with the WI chapter of the Arthritis Foundation located in West Allis. He was appreciated as the volunteer who took on whatever task needed to get done.
In retirement, Gary became an active member of the Harley Davidson (HOGS) of Milwaukee from, 2007-2016. He traveled extensively in many states.
Gary was a long time member of the Zion Lutheran Church in South Milwaukee, serving on several financial committees. He was also a member of the Milwaukee Zoological Society and a long time supporter of the wolf pack and Happy the Hippo.
Gary was preceded in death by his wife (Shari), parents Oscar and Evelyn (Zillges) and brother Joseph of Oshkosh, and a brother Ronald of Chicago. He also mourned the loss of many friends including Tom Griffin and Gary Peterson of South Milwaukee.
Gary remarried in 2012 and is survived by his wife Ambrocia, daughters Connie and Tina (Jonathan) and grandson Ethan of Apple Valley, MN, as well as brother James. Despite his first wife’s death in 1992, Gary maintained loving relationships with Shari’s family. He also has many cousins in Oshkosh and many nieces and nephews throughout the US and in the town of Malabuyoc, Cebu, Philippines.
Gary lived on Lakeview Road for close to 40 years and his neighbors were important friends in his life.
Memorial services will be held on Monday, July 17 at the Zion Lutheran Church, 900 Michigan Ave., South Milwaukee. Visitation from 9-11am, service at 11am.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Wisconsin Arthritis Foundation appreciated.

Chapter mtg isnt a mtg, its a drag race!

Hello everyone,

Who’s ready to have some fun at Great Lakes Dragway?!?

Kick stands up will be from the House of Harley at 5pm on Tuesday the 18th. This will not be a Chapter ride, we will be riding with House of Harley employees down to the Route 20 Outhouse where we will meet up with the Racine employees and Chapter members. We will then continue on the the drag strip. If we all enter as a group, there will be no admission fee for spectators.

If you can not make the ride or would prefer to come in a car, there will be a limited number of free admission passes at the House of Harley.

Once we are there, there will be no formal meeting. We’ll hang out, watch the races, and have a good time. Some of us may even run our bikes down the track. So, on that note…

If you’d like to take your bike on the track:

-$20 for as many runs as you can get in
-Full face helmet required
-Riding jacket required
-Gloves required
-Your bike must also have a belt guard (most do from the factory) and pass a safety inspection at the track

I hope you are all excited! I know I am!

Matt

Shrek Trek Postponed!

With deep regrets, it necessary to postpone the first Shrek Trek.  I have found that booking hotels surrounding national holidays is a tough gig.  I don’t believe anyone should have to pay $180 for a $100 hotel room just because of a national holiday.  I do understand supply and demand, but I don’t like paying for it, nor do I believe Milwaukee HOG Chapter members should either.

The good news is, I am not giving up.  We are still going to the Headwaters of the Mississippi River….. in 2018.  I will have details before year end so we can start the planning process.  I sincerely regret any inconvenience this has caused.  Please support the Great Lakes HOG Rally in August and/or the Milwaukee Rally, Labor Day weekend.

Ride to the Have a Heart Ride

For anyone who is going to the Suburban Milwaukee HOG Chapter Have a Heart Ride at Suburban Harley Davidson on June 10th and wants to ride in as a Chapter, please meet at the Speedway at 9091 N 76th St (Northridge outlot, north of Brown Deer Rd.) at 10 am.  KSU by 10:30.
